SOFTBALL DROPS BOTH ENDS OF DOUBLE DIP TO CONFERENCE RIVAL LASELL COLLEGE
The Mount Ida College Softball team dropped both ends of their
first home Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader
of the season losing to Lasell College 15-0 and 21-4. The Mustangs
drop their overall record to 3-15 on the season, 2-6 in the GNAC,
while the Lasers improve to 3-13, 2-0 in league play.
Lasell definitely brought their bats, starting up the scoring
immediately in the first inning of game one off a two run blast by
freshman Michelle Torres (Waltham, MA). After a 2-0 first, the
Mustangs could muster much offensive in the bottom half only
cracking one out of their three hits off the bat of sophomore
shortstop Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old
Rochester). The Lasers would have an even bigger
inning in the top of the second capitalizing on two key errors by
the hosts. With two runners on, freshman Kelly Silvia (Vineyard
Haven, MA) jacked a three run missile to left field making it a
quick 5-0 in favor of Lasell. Torres would add her second homer of
the game, a three run shot, to put her team ahead 9-0 in a seven
run second inning.
MIC didn’t have an answer, while LC continued to pound the
ball at the plate. After a 1-2-3 inning, the Lasers came out in the
bottom of the third swing for the fences again. They would add six
more to the scoreboard off five singles and a double into the gap
eventually pulling away for good and taking game one 15-0. Lorenco
would tally two of the Mustangs three hits while
juniorKerri Kwasek (Framingham,
MA/Framingham) had the other. Kwasek, who gave up15
runs, which were all earned, would walk six and let up 13 hits.
Game two was fairly close with both teams exchanging runs up until
the top of the sixth inning. The Lasers took a quick 4-0 advantage
in the top of the first starting with a one run single by Torres. A
three run shot by freshman Heather Lynch (Warwick, RI), her first
of three in the game, extended the visitors lead to four runs after
one.
It was all goose eggs for the next inning and a half until the
Mustangs finally got on the board in the bottom of the third.
MIC’s three runs came during a two out rally that was started
by senior captain Tiffany Kowarsky (Springfield,
MA/Lowgmeadow) who doubled to right center. Lorenco
ripped a single to advance the runner to third base and the
Mustangs would tally their first score off an error by the left
fielder off a fly ball by freshman Kris Duplisea
(Chicopee, MA/Chicopee). Kwasek would rock the next
pitch into left center, driving in Lorenco for run number two of
the inning. Finally, Mount Ida would catch a break with Duplisea
scoring the final run of the rally on a wild pitch making it 4-3 in
favor of the visitors.
After another scoreless inning in the fourth, the Lasers tacked on
four more in the top of the fifth starting with a two run jack by
Lynch, her second of the game. They would reel off a double and
single back to back adding two more runs off errors by the
Mustangs. Mount Ida would add a run in the bottom of the inning on
a ripped double to the right field gap by Kwasek making it 8-4 in
favor of Lasell.
The fifth inning would prove to be the back breaker for the
Mustangs giving up a total of 13 runs throughout the inning and
three fielding errors. It would also include three home runs, one
of which was a grand slam by Lynch, her third of the game driving
in a total of 10 runs. The Lasers would pound out eight more hits
starting out with Lynch’s blast and reeling off 9 more runs.
LC freshman Kelli Taylor (Medway, MA) and junior Tiffany Perla
(Westminster, MA) added a couple of three run dingers giving Lasell
the 21-4 victory.
The Mustangs will travel to Little East Conference (LEC)
UMass-Boston this Wednesday with the start of the doubleheader at
3:00 p.m.
