MOUNT IDA SOFTBALL SWEEPS SECOND TWIN BILL OF SEASON
Junior Kerri Kwasek (Framingham,
MA/Framingham) blasted two homeruns whiling pitching
a complete game four hitter in the Mustangs conference twin bill
sweep against Albertus Magnus College this Sunday winning 13-3 and
9-4. Mount Ida would improve to 7-17, 5-7 in Great Northeast
Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with the Falcons dropping to 1-11
on the season, 0-8 in league play. The Mustangs are one victory
away from doubling their win total in 2007 only claiming four
W’s last season.
Game one was all about Mount Ida tallying runs during every inning
of play. After freshman catcher Kris Duplisea
(Chicopee, MA/Chicopee) hit a sac fly to drive in the
first run of the contest, Kwasek would crush a two run homer to
give the Mustangs the 3-0 advantage right off the bat.
The hosts would tack on five more scores in the bottom of the
second. Sophomore Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old
Rochester) would hammer her first round tripper of
the season, driving in three more to stretch the Mustang lead to
6-0. Two batters later, the Mustangs would touch them all again off
Kwasek’s second blast of the game making it 8-0 Mount Ida.
The Falcons would turn in another goose egg in the beginning of
three.
The Mustangs would add five insurance runs on a sacrifice fly by
Lorenco, tallying her fourth RBI of the day. Duplisea would reach
on an error by the right fielder scoring two more and putting the
mercy rule into effect leading 11-0.
The Falcons would eventually get on the board off a three run blast
by sophomore Jessica Newbig (North Haven, CT/Sacred Heart Academy).
Mount Ida would put the final nail in the coffin in the bottom of
the fourth on a seed by freshman Kiley Jean (North
Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) driving in two more
giving the Mustangs the 13-3 victory.
Mustang ace Kwasek would pitch five strong innings only giving up
three runs on four hits while striking out three with two walks.
AMC hurler senior Meredith Berry (Meridan, CT/Platt) took the loss
pitching four innings giving up 12 hits and 11 earned runs.
After a quick hiatus, game two would begin with the Falcons
notching the first run on a ground rule double by Berry taking the
immediate 1-0 advantage. That would be the only lead the visitors
would see. The Mustangs would tie it up starting in the bottom of
the first on a single by Lorenco. They would jump ahead on a
fielder’s choice off a grounder to the pitcher by Kwasek
scoring Lorenco making it 2-1.
The second inning would be won by the Mustangs, adding one more to
their column, off another fielder’s choice making it 3-1. The
Falcons would match in the top of the third on a passed ball
pulling with one run.
But the Mustangs wouldn’t let up, with one on, Duplisea roped
a single to left extending their lead to 4-2. They would add
another in the inning on an error by the left fielder scoring
Kwasek making it 5-2.
Mount Ida would pull away in the bottom the fifth notching four
runs off two doubles by Duplisea and Kwasek giving the hosts the
outright 9-2 advantage. The Falcons would tally two more in the top
of the following inning, but it wouldn’t be enough, giving
the Mustangs the 9-4 victory, their fifth conference win of the
season.
Senior captain Ashley Kowarsky (Springfield,
MA/Longmeadow) started game two for the Mustangs
hurling four innings giving up all three runs while striking out
three and walking five. Kwasek would pitch the last four sets for
MIC only giving up one hit and sitting down three. The Falcons
would get six innings out of senior Jessica Zanghi (Milford,
CT/Foran) surrendering all nine runs, eight earned, striking out
four, and walking six.
The Mustangs will travel to Daniel Webster College this Wednesday
for the makeup of Friday’s rainout, first pitch coming at
3:00 p.m.
