MUSTANG SOFTBALL SPLITS GNAC DOUBLE DIP WITH LIONS

The Mount Ida College women's softball team split their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home opener against visiting Emerson College dropping game one 8-0 and capturing a close 2-1 victory in game two on a rainy Thursday afternoon.  The Mustangs improve to 4-10 overall, 2-2 in the GNAC while the Lions drop their first GNAC loss of the season standing at 5-1, 5-11 overall.

Game one ended in six innings due to the mercy rule and was dominated by Lion freshman hurler Kelsey Tuthill (Middlefield, CT/Suffield) who pitched all six frames of three hit ball, striking out nine.  Mustang starter, freshman Kim Hurley (Fiskdale, MA/Tantasqua Regional), gave up all eight runs on nine hits, only six that were earned.

Emerson came out swinging the bats with two runs on two hits in the first inning.  A lead off triple by junior Bridget Farago (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) started up the offense.  After a walk, a ground out by Lion sophomore Brittany Martin (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) plated the first run of the game with the visitors leading 1-0.  Emerson scored again after a Tuthill single scoring senior Catie McDonough (North Adams, MA/Drury), who had drawn the walk, with the Lions leading 2-0.

We fast forward to the top of the third inning with Farago leading off again with a double to deep right center field.  After two consecutive outs, Farago crossed the plate on a wild pitch making it 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

The action was stagnant for the next inning and a half until the Lions registered a four run, three hit inning that was crippled on two errors by the Mustangs.  After a lead off fly out by Emerson, the circus started for Mount Ida after a throwing error by the shortstop.  Junior Nikki Battaglia (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) followed with a single to left and a line out gave the Lions two outs with two runners on.  Another error by the Mustangs juiced the bases which proved to be costly in an attempt for a comeback.  Emerson freshman Kendal Pieguss (Suquamish, WA/North Kitsap) hammered a base clearing double to left center field taking the 6-0 advantage.  After a wild pitch from Hurley, Pieguss advanced to third and was eventually driven in on double by Lion sophomore Sierra Wood (Torrance, CA/Torrance) leading 7-0 after top of the fifth.

The Lions put the mercy rule in effect in the top of the sixth inning on a fielder's choice scoring Farago who had led the inning off with a single.  The Lions ultimately captured the 8-0 victory in the opening of the day's twin bill.

Game two was different story for the Mustangs who saw seven solid innings from senior captain Kerri Kwasek (Framingham, MA/Framingham) giving up only six hits, one run, with three strikeouts.  Emerson hurler freshman Sarah Murray (Auburn, NH/Manchester Memorial) went the distance for the Lions surrendering two runs, both unearned, on five hits taking the loss.

It was quiet for the opening of the game; the Mustangs avoided some damage after back-to-back walks by Kwasek to start the top of the first.  It was erased after a fly out, strikeout, and pop up.

The Mustangs did their damage in the bottom of the second inning and it all started with a ripped single to left by Hurley who had been inserted as the designated player in game two.  A fielder's choice by sophomore Madeline Anderson (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and a throwing error by the Lions third baseman scored Hurley from first base giving the Mustangs the 1-0 lead, putting Anderson on third.  Another costly throwing error by the Emerson shortstop off a grounder by freshman Tracy Koukol (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) scored Anderson making it 2-0 Mustangs.

The Lions answered in the top of the fourth inning off two errors by Mount Ida.  A bobbled grounder at third by the Mustangs started the inning.  The runner at first would advance on a fielder's choice to first base.  Another error by Mount Ida, this time on a throwing error by sophomore left fielder Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union), put the runner at third.  A single by Lion sophomore Lynn Herman (Boca Raton, FL/St. Andrews) scored Emerson's first run of the game trailing after the fourth, 2-1.

It was quiet until the top of the seventh inning when the Lions had their last crack to tie the score.  A lead off single to right field by Herman and a 3-4 sacrifice bunt put Herman in scoring position.  A deep fly ball to center field by Farago gave the Lions a chance to score the runner from second but junior shortstop Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional) fired a strike to home plate erasing any chances for the run to cross.  The Mustangs got out of the inning and snatched the 2-1 GNAC victory over Emerson, the Lions first conference loss of the season.

It was a very quiet day at the dish for Mount Ida manufacturing only eight hits in two games.  It was enough to take home a crucial victory for the Mustangs in the standings taking down the previously undefeated Lions who entered today's twin bill at a perfect 4-0 in the GNAC.

The Mustangs will play again tomorrow at Mount Ida in another tough conference match-up against visiting Rivier College starting at 3:00 p.m.
