MUSTANGS SPLIT FINAL HOME TWIN BILL OF WEEK

The Mount Ida College women's softball team split their fourth consecutive double header of the week against visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Emmanuel College losing game one 12-4 and capturing the victory in game two 11-2.  The Mustangs move to 6-12 overall and an even .500 at 4-4 in the GNAC while the Saints shift to 5-11 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.

Game one was over in the top of the first inning for Mount Ida after a disastrous showing in the field giving up eight runs on five hits and four costly errors.  Two singles started the inning for the Saints off the bats of junior Samantha Luther (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle) and freshman Chelsey Guselli (Methuen, MA/Central Catholic).  An error by the shortstop scored the first run for Emmanuel making it 1-0 with one no outs.

After a ground out and a walk, the bases were juiced up for the Saints.  A fielder's choice by Saints freshman Christina Proulx (Boxborough, MA/Action-Boxborough Regional) forced in another run leading 2-0.

A single by Kristina Borrelli (Kingston, MA/Silver Lake Regional) with the bases loaded forced in another run for Emmanuel taking the 3-0 advantage.  A throwing error by the Mustangs at third base plated an unearned run with the Saints building the lead up 4-0 with one out.

Sarah Palmer-Thompson (Dennis, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) singled to center field juicing the bases for the second time in the inning and another error by the Mustangs scored the fifth run up 5-0.  It got ugly at this point with the visitors plating three more runs, two due to errors by Mount Ida, leading 8-0 after the top of the first.

After a single to left field by freshman Erica Belliveau (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury), the Mustangs answered on a two run homer by senior captain Kerri Kwasek (Framingham, MA/Framingham).  It was Kwasek's second round tripper in as many days now trailing 8-2.

The Saints added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning on four hits and one error making it 12-2.  The Mustangs tried to make a comeback with another homerun, this time coming from Belliveau for her first of the season, but came up short only scoring two runs.  Mount Ida fell in game one by a score of 12-4.

Kwasek pitched game one for Mount Ida giving up 11 hits and only six earned runs with the defense struggling surprisingly.  Saints ace Kathryn Copp (Fremont, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas) threw all six frames for the visitors surrendering six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Game two was flip flopped with Emmanuel struggling in the field giving up 11 runs, only seven earned.   Kwasek unfortunately had to pitch game two for the Mustangs due to a season ending finger injury to freshman hurler Kim Hurley (Fiskdale, MA/Tantasqua Regional).  Freshman Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, ME/Lake Regional) took the mound for the Saints in game two.

The bottom of the opening frame is where the action started with the hosts scoring two runs on two hits.   A lead off walk to junior Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional) followed by a single from sophomore Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, CT/Lamoille Union) put two runners on with no outs.  A pass ball advanced the speedy base runners to second and third and a wild pitch ultimately scored Lorenco for the 1-0 Mustang advantage.  A ripped single by senior captain Tiffany Kowarsky (Springfield, MA/Longmeadow) made it 2-0 Mount Ida to end the inning. The Saints tied the score in the bottom half making it 2-2 after a two run, four hit frame.

The Mustangs pulled away after a huge inning in the bottom of the third on an eight run, six hit set featuring two costly errors by the visitors.  A single and a walk put two runners on followed by the Saints first error scoring another up 3-2, Mount Ida.  Another Kowarsky single to right center scored two more giving the Mustangs the 5-2 advantage.  Two more singles by sophomore Maddy Anderson (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and freshman Erin Dufficy (Shelton, CT/Shelton) plated more runs leading 6-2.  A Lauren Garnick (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) single to right and a fielder's choice juiced the bases.  Lorenco came up and crushed a double to left field, eventually scoring on an overthrow for a double with a two base error, clearing the bags, taking the 10-2 lead ending the inning.

The Mustangs managed to score another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on another Kowarsky single scoring Belliveau.  Mount Ida put the mercy run in effect and captured the 11-2 victory in the back end of the day's twin bill shutting down the game in the fifth inning.

Kowarsky was big for the Mustangs in game two with four RBI's on three hits, scoring one run.  Lorenco also had a huge game two with two hits and four RBI's along with three runs scored.

The Mustangs will finally have a break after a long week that featured 10 games, five doubleheaders, from Sunday to Saturday.  They will pick up the action at hosting non-conference UMASS - Boston this coming Wednesday starting at 3:00 p.m.
