MUSTANGS BLANKED AGAINST MONKS ON SENIOR DAY
On senior day, the Mount Ida College women's softball team dropped both ends of this Friday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double header against visiting St. Joseph's College (ME) losing game one 4-0 and game two 13-0. The Mustangs fall to 10-20 overall, 6-12 in conference play while the Monks improve to 20-10, 14-6 in the GNAC.
Although the Mustangs dropped game one, it was fairly close for most of the contest starting with a two run, one hit top of the third inning. A lead off error by the Mustangs and a stolen base put a runner on second with no outs. Freshman Emily Leverone (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet) stepped up next and hammered a homerun giving the visitors the 2-0 lead.
The Monks added another in the top of the fourth on a one run, one hit inning that featured an error by Mount Ida. Two consecutive outs to lead off the inning gave the Mustangs hope to get out unscathed. But a bunt single and a stolen base put speedster Liz Jordan (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) on second with two down. Another error by the hosts scored Jordan from second taking the 3-0 lead.
The added their final run in the top of the seventh inning on a one run, two hit inning. After a lead off ground out, Leverone crushed a double to left center and was eventually driven in by an Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle) single. That gave the Monks the 4-0 lead and after a three an out by the Mustangs in the bottom of the seventh it gave the visitors the game one win.
Game two was not pretty for the Mustangs who did not muster a single run for two games and only managed to string together three combined hits for the entire day. Senior hurler Kerri Kwasek (Framingham, MA/Framingham) pitched almost every inning on the day for Mount Ida until she was relieved by freshman Erin Dufficy (Shelton, CT/Shelton) in the top of the sixth inning in game two.
The Monks pounded the Mustang pitching in game two banging out 15 hits including six doubles and 15 singles. Everyone who started game two for the visitors tallied a hit while Leverone, Dunn, and junior Liddy Van der Linden (Worcester, MA/St. Peter Marian) added three hits a piece combining for six RBI's. Freshman Ashley Geel (St. George, ME/Georges Valley) unloaded the bases in the top of the sixth with a base clearing double that was crushed to left center.
The visitors eventually ran away with the 13-0 GNAC victory snapping the Mustangs three game winning streak. Monks game two hurler, freshman Madylan Kluna (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle), pitched a complete game one hitting with seven strikeouts in the six innings. Kwasek gave up the majority of the runs surrendering 13 hits on 10 runs in five and a third.
The Mustangs will have a very busy weekend of GNAC play ahead traveling to Norwich University Saturday, Suffolk University Sunday, and Albertus Magnus College Monday. Saturday's contests will start at 3:00 p.m. in Norwich, Vermont.
