MUSTANG SOFTBALL BREAK PROGRAM RECORD FOR WINS

The Mount Ida College women’s softball team captured both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Friday afternoon against visiting Albertus Magnus College winning game one 11-0 and game two 19-4.  Both ends of the twin bill were affected by the mercy rule calling the contest after five innings of work.  The Mustangs, who hold their GNAC post-season destiny in their hands with two crucial conference double dips in the next two days, improve to 15-16, 8-12 in league play while the Falcons stay winless at 0-26, 0-20 in the GNAC.  With the victory in game one today the Mustangs captured the highest regular season winning total in the history of the Mount Ida College softball program surpassing 13 wins back in 2006 (15).

Three Mount Ida College freshmen powered the Mustangs in an 11-0 shutout in the opening end the days GNAC twin bill all driving in two runs apiece.  Freshman Danielle Mitchell (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson Regional) blasted a double driving in a deuce with a run scored.  Junior Erica Belliveau (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury) crushed a triple to drive in one as well.  Six Falcon errors throughout the contest proved to be the back breaker for the visitors who also had some serious issues generating any offense.  Mount Ida freshman hurler Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) was solid on the mound whiffing 10 batters with no walks and only three hits surrendered.

Freshman catcher Cortney Rebello (North Dartmouth, MA/Great New Bedford) powered the Mustangs in game two going 3-4 with a single and a double good for four runs batted in the 19-4 romping.  Freshman outfielder Chaise Courbron (Monroe, CT/Masuk) drove in three runs of her own with bases clearing double going 1-4.  Belliveau and freshmen Erica Mendez (Salem, MA/Salem), Tiffany Hamann (Newton, MA/Newton North), and Ashley White (Salem, MA/Salem) all added two RBI’s each.  A 14 run bottom of the third inning for the Mustangs solidified the win for the hosts on a six hit, five error frame.  Freshman Denise Picard (Winooski, VT/Winsooski) started game two giving up three hits and four runs, three of which were earned.  Meeker finished off the Falcons in the last three sets surrendering no hits with five strikeouts.

The Mustangs have two more doubleheaders to fit in before their fate is revealed for the GNAC post-season tournament.  They will play Lasell College Saturday afternoon starting at 12:00 p.m.
