MUSTANG SOFTBALL SPLITS TWIN BILL AGAINST LASELL

The Mount Ida College women’s softball team split a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twin bill against visiting Lasell College this Saturday winning game one 11-3, which could be very important in the upcoming day’s for a post-season berth, but dropping game two 9-5 on a rainy and raw game day in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs improve to 16-17, 9-13 in league play while The Lasers inch closer to a playoff bid standing at 17-19, 13-9 in the GNAC.

Freshman catcher Cortney Rebello (North Dartmouth, MA/Great New Bedford) was outstanding for Mount Ida in the 11-3 game one win going 3-4 with four runs batted in and a huge homerun along with an RBI double in the fourth inning.  Junior Erin Dufficy (Shelton, CT/Shelton), sophomore Erica Belliveau (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury), and freshman Devan Meeker (Bantam, CT/Litchfield) and Tiffany Hamann (Newton, MA/Newton North) all tallied an RBI apiece.  Meeker and Hamann added two hits each as well. 

Meeker was solid for the Mustangs on the mound putting in six innings of work giving up two earned runs on nine hits adding three strikeouts.  Sophomore hurler Jacqueline Saluti (Braintree, MA/Braintree) went five and one third for the Lasers surrendering 11 hits with four K’s and five earned runs.  The visitors had four big errors that blew open the game for the hosts putting the mercy rule into effect in the sixth inning. 

Mount Ida had a tough first inning in game two giving up four runs on two hits with three costly errors that put the Mustangs in a hole early that they were unable to dig out of.  They would eventually give up another three runs plated in the top of the fourth inning that led to their demise dropping the 9-5 GNAC loss. 

Most of the offense generated by Mount Ida came via three errors by the visitors scoring two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.  Sophomore Tracy Koukol (North Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) and freshman Chaise Courbron (Monroe, CT/Masuk) added one RBI apiece with two hits coming from Courbron. 

Meeker went the distance for the Mustangs surrendering nine hits and six earned runs with four strikeouts and four walks. 

The Mustangs will host their final GNAC twin bill of the season Sunday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts against visiting St. Joseph’s College (CT) starting at 12:00 p.m.
