Mustangs Set Down by Muskies in Rain-Shortened Florida Finale

CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Ida College completed their run at the National Training Center tournament on Thursday morning, falling by a 12-1 score-line in five innings to the Muskies of Lakeland College (Wis.) after their first game of the day against Becker College was cancelled due to field conditions from rain overnight.

The Mustangs grabbed their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Muhlenforth (Bohemia, N.Y.) singled to lead off the frame. Muhlenforth moved up on a passed ball and a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch uncorked by the Muskies.

Freshman Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) slammed a pair of doubles for the Mustangs during a 3-3 afternoon at the plate. She singled up the middle to begin a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth that saw three straight singles by the Mustangs. Catcher Emma Morton (Winchester, Mass.) rapped a base hit to left field and Shannon McArthur (Coventry, R.I.) singled through the left side to load the bases, but the Mustangs were unable to push another run across the plate.

Right fielder Calie Delisi (Oak Forest, Ill.) went 3-3 at the plate with five runs batted in to lead the Muskie's lineup, which collected 15 hits in the game. First baseman Mikayla Hilton (Saukville, Wis.) added two hits in two at-bats, took a walk, scored three times and drove in a run as well.

Lakeland rapped out seven runs on six hits in the top of the first inning to grab an early advantage. The first three batters in the Lakeland lineup singled, loading the bases, before three straight walks sandwiched around a triple-steal, drove in three runs.

Delisi then knocked in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single from the seventh spot in the lineup. She drove in another run with a single to left field in the top of the second, Lakeland's only run in that frame, and then singled up the middle to plate two Muskies as part of a four-run third inning for Lakeland.

Ashley Hough (Rapid River, Mich.) and Sami Jo Williams (Sussex, Wis.) each singled twice in the first inning alone, and each drove in a run with a single through the left side on their second at-bat, after scoring their first time up, Hough on a walk, and Williams on a steal of home plate.

Five straight two-out singles by the heart of the Lakeland lineup added to the lead in the third inning, with an RBI single by designated player Jessica Beaudry (Gladstone, Mich.) setting the table for Delisi's two-run base knock.

Beaudry had two runs batted in in the game, after taking a bases loaded walk herself in the first inning. Third baseman Rosa Gonzalez (Elwood, Ill.) also had two hits in the game, and scored twice.

Freshman Brooke Paige (Harbor Springs, Mich.) earned the first win of her collegiate career for Lakeland (1-1). She tossed three innings of shutout softball, allowing three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Senior Elizabeth Zimmerman (Shawano, Wis.) threw two innings of relief in which she allowed one run on five hits without a walk. Zimmerman struck out one batter.

Muhlenforth drops to 0-6 on the year with another complete game with two strikeouts and 12 earned runs, as neither team made an error in the contest.

Michele MacDonald (N. Dighton, Mass.) and Alexis Boswell (Amesbury, Mass.) had the other two hits in the game for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida (0-9) begins Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday, March 21st when they host Johnson & Wales University in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm in Newton.

Lakeland improves to 5-6 ahead of another game on Thursday against Wheaton (Ill.) in Clermont.
