WINTHROP, Mass. -- Junior pitcher Nicole Handzel (Palmer, Mass.) has been named the Corvias Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball pitcher of the week, it was announced on Monday afternoon by the conference office and Assistant Commissioner Mike Ghika.
In the Mustang's final three days in Florida, Handzel posted a 2-2 record in five appearances, including two complete game victories in which she allowed no earned runs in a combined twelve inings.
Handzel's best outing of the week was a one-hitter with three strikeouts in an 8-0 shutout of Northwestern (Minn.) in five innings. She also struck out seven batters and gave up just an unearned run in Mount Ida's 5-1 win over Newbury to start the week.
She ended the week by striking out eight batters against Monmouth and collecting ten more strikeouts versus SUNY Potsdam, both games in which she threw seven innings and allowed three earned runs apiece.
A 2014 GNAC All-Conference selection, Handzel has struck out 40 batters in seven appearances this year and has an ERA of just 2.03.
The 2-6 Mustangs will make their Massachusetts debut next Sunday with a non-conference game at Regis before their home opener against Eastern Nazarene on March 29th.
