GAME #1 FINAL:          ALBERTUS MAGNUS 3, MOUNT IDA 0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. --  Junior Kristen Cunning (Hoboken, N.J.) scored the winning run in the opener on a sacrifice fly and tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout in the nightcap to lead Albertus Magnus to a sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Mount Ida Saturday afternoon by scores of 3-2 in a nine-inning lid-lifter and 3-0 in league games played at the Shea Complex.

The host Falcons (7-4, 2-0 GNAC) overcame a pair of one-run deficits in the opening contest, as the visiting Mustangs (2-8, 0-2 GNAC), who were originally scheduled to host the twinbill, grabbed a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat on an RBI single by senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.).  Albertus Magnus evened matters in the top of the second on a passed ball, and Mount Ida took a 2-1 edge in the third on Microulis’s second run-scoring single of the day.  The Falcons plated the tying tally in the fourth on Cunning’s RBI single, and that score held up until the top of the ninth when the international tie breaker was employed, as Cunning was placed on second, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on junior Maxine Sanchez’s (Corona, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to center.  Microulis was placed on second in the bottom half of the frame for the Mustangs, but she was unable to score the tying run after advancing to third.

Cunning and senior Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) each had two hits as part of a 10-hit attack in the first contest for Albertus Magnus, as sophomore Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) went the distance and struck out three to improve to 2-1 for the Falcons.  Microulis and sophomore Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) each rapped out three of Mount Ida’s 12 hits in the opening game setback, as freshman Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) allowed just one earned run and fanned a pair while also going the distance inside the circle for the Mustangs.

Cunning gave Albertus Magnus the only run it would need in the second inning of the nightcap when she scored on a fielder’s choice, and she helped her own cause with a sixth inning RBI single that was followed in the seventh by a run-scoring safety off the bat of senior Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.).  Cunning scattered four singles and struck out four to improve to 3-1 on the spring for the Falcons, who received two hits from Wehder and sophomore Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) as part of a 10-hit attack.  Junior Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H.) and freshman Lindsay Finney (Bennington, Vt.) each had two hits in the second game setback for Mount Ida, as freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) went the distance and struck out five inside the circle for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida hosts Newbury in a non-league doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Mount Ida Softball Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Albertus Magnus entertains Simmons in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference twinbill on Sunday afternoon at the Shea Complex that begins at Noon.
