GAME #1 FINAL: MOUNT IDA 8, SIMMONS 4
GAME #2 FINAL: SIMMONS 5, MOUNT IDA 1
BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) rapped out three hits and drove in three runs to lead Mount Ida to an 8-4 opening game victory and a split of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Simmons Saturday afternoon at Daly Field, as the host Sharks posted a 5-1 triumph in the nightcap.
The visiting Mustangs (3-11, 1-3 GNAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its first at-bat of the opener on an error and a Microulis RBI single, but Simmons (8-10, 2-4 GNAC) sliced that margin in half in the bottom of the frame on junior Dom Ortiz’s (Lawrence, Mass.) run-scoring double. The Sharks evened matters in the second on freshman Sydney DeVogt’s (Exeter, N.H.) RBI single, but Mount Ida took the lead for good with another two-run rally in the third highlighted by run-scoring singles off the bats of junior Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H.) and freshman Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.).
After the hosts crept back to within a run in the bottom of the third on Ortiz’s second RBI double of the game, the visitors plated a run in the fifth on Smith’s sacrifice fly and tacked on three insurance tallies in the sixth on Microulis’s two-run two-bagger and Weston’s second RBI single of the day. Ortiz drove in her third run of the contest for Simmons in the bottom of the seventh to account for the game’s final margin, as Mount Ida presented Head Coach Katie Zuman with her 125th career victory in the triumph.
Microulis, Weston and freshmen Caitlin Hogan (Derry, N.H.) and Jill Skalski (Cranford, N.J.) each had three hits as part of a 16-hit attack in the opener for the Mustangs in support of Smith, who allowed two earned runs and struck out six in going the distance to collect her first career victory inside the circle. Ortiz rapped out three of the Sharks’ 11 opening game hits, as sophomore Alex Soqui (Acushnet, Mass.) also collected three hits at the plate but suffered the pitching setback for Simmons in allowing four runs over the first 2 1/3 innings of play.
Simmons took a 2-0 first inning lead in the nightcap on junior Taylor LeBrun’s (Milford, Mass.) two-run single, and after Mount Ida got a run back in the second on junior Jenni Jackson’s (Marlboro, Mass.) RBI groundout, the Sharks extended their lead with single tallies in the second and third frames on infield singles by Soqui and sophomore Lauren Del Vacchio (Murrieta, Calif.), who closed out the scoring with a fourth inning sacrifice fly. Sophomore Molly Hennessey (Charlton, Mass.) and freshman Marissa Santoro (Franklin, Mass.) each had two hits as part of a seven-hit attack in the second game triumph for Simmons in support of senior Juliet Nelson (Cumberland, R.I.), who went the distance and struck out five to improve to 5-4 on the spring. Microulis and freshman Savannah Neilan (Somerset, Mass.) each had two hits in the nightcap setback for the Mustangs, as freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) allowed just one earned run and fanned a pair in going the route inside the circle for the visitors.
Mount Ida travels to Nashua, N.H. on Wednesday evening to take on Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Simmons heads to Auburndale, Mass.to square off with Lasell in a GNAC twinbill that begins at 3:00 p.m.
