WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS TO NUMBER ONE CONFERENCE SEED EMMANUEL COLLEGE

The Mount Ida Women’s basketball team dropped their sixth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game to Emmanuel College 94-65 this past Wednesday at the Mount Ida Athletic Center.  The Mustangs are now 3-6 in the GNAC and 6-15 overall as Emmanuel improves to 9-0 in the GNAC and 16-5 overall.

The first half of play set the tone for the rest of the contest as the Saints came out firing four minutes into the game with EC going on an 18-2 run.  Immediately following the hosts would cut the lead to ten with the help of Nicole Casimiro (Lee, NH/Oyster River) who had ten of her twelve points in the first half.  The remainder of the first set was controlled by the Saints as they were led by the strong play of guard Iman Davis (Toms River, NJ/St. George’s) while she netted ten of her team high 15 in the first stanza.  Unfortunately for the MIC a decent 42% shooting from the field was not enough as the Saints shot 50% and made 12-18 from the charity stripe.  The halftime buzzer sounded with the score 52-29 in favor of the visitors.

The story of the game was turnovers by the Mustang offense.  They started the game with four straight while the tough uphill battle continued in the second half.  The Saints blew it open with a spread attack in which four players ended up with double digits in points.  Although everything seemed to be getting out of hand, the Mustangs kept fighting as they outscored the Saints 29-12 for the final nine minutes of the game.  Crystal Burgess (Lowell, MA/Lowell Regional Tech.) led the Mustangs with a game high 25 points along with great defense as she robbed Saint ball-handlers for seven steals.

Mount Ida saw a great effort from Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) who pitched in with nine points, eight rebounds, and six assists.  Elise McLear (Swansea, MA/Case) put up six points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals for the Mustangs.

The Mount Ida Women’s Basketball team continues their season with two more home games on the schedule with the most recent coming this weekend against Simmons College at 1:00 p.m.
