NEW FACES LOOK TO BOOST WOMEN'S HOOPS IN '08-'09

First year head coach Jack Casey will look to integrate five returning players, six newcomers, and a completely different system to lead his team to their first ever post season in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in 2008-09.    Mount Ida women's basketball will showcase a strong defensive mindset led by backcourt speed and quickness, strong rebounding on both boards, and great team chemistry.  Coach Casey and the Mustangs will come out to compete night in and night out in a very difficult conference.

The Mustangs return five players including leading scorer and rebounder last season junior Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, MA/Attleboro).  Parisi will bring a strong offensive presence in the paint and around the outside along with excellent rebounding skills.  Parisi, who was playing out of position last year, will step into her familiar spot and take full advantage of her skill from the perimeter as well as under the basket.

Senior Elise McLear (Swansea, MA/Case) will control the ball handling with outstanding speed, great court vision, and solid defense while junior Nicole Casimiro (Lee, NH/Oyster River) will provide a threat from three point land.  Sophomore Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) stepped up when the Mustangs lost numbers halfway through the season last year in the guard position with great quickness and tenacious defense.

Height was a big issue last season for Mount Ida, but not this year with four girls at six feet and freshman center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) standing tall at 6-3.  Morvan, who will be a great presence down low, has great touch around the hoop and will be a solid addition.   Rebounding will no longer be as difficult as it was in 2007-08.  Aside from Morvan, freshman Hannah Blum (Raleigh, NC/Broughton) will add very strong inside skills and great range to the team.

Junior Ashley Boyd (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson), who transferred to Mount Ida this year from Daniel Webster College, has shown her experienced feel for the game along with solid offensive skills.  Freshman Jenny Davis (Bristol, England/Filton College), another 6-0 newcomer, will provide inside presence along with good range from the perimeter.

Freshmen Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central), also a member of the women's cross country team, will provide solid guard play along with intense defensive skills that will make it difficult for opponents on offense.  Her speed and quickness will be vital moving the ball up and down the court.  Freshman Shaniece Bynoe (Melrose, MA/Everett) is a hard worker with good speed who will add another spark for the Mustangs off the bench this season.

Coach Casey and the Mount Ida women's basketball team look forward to an exciting season of Mustang basketball venturing into their second year as part of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
