WOMEN'S LAX NOTCHES FIRST EVER VICTORY OVER AMCATS 19-4
Mount Ida College women’s lacrosse junior Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) scored a game-high 10 goals, propelling the Mustangs to a 19-4 victory over hosting Anna Maria College during Mount Ida’s program debut at AMCAT Field on Thursday evening in Paxton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs improve to 1-0 with the win while the hosts drop to 0-2 on the season.
Thompson paced the Mustangs with her 10 goals, putting 13 of her 16 shots on net. Junior captain Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/North Burlington Regional) was solid collecting seven points on six goals and an assist, while also grabbing a team-high six ground balls. Freshmen Stephanie Hill (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) and Roshnilde Lauriston (Taunton, MA/Taunton) chipped in with three points apiece, while goalkeeper Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) earned the win in net in her first ever appearance, making seven saves and only surrendering four scores.
The AMCATS were led by sophomore Amanda Hevy’s (North Brookfield, MA) team-high three goals, while junior Sarah Moore (Holden, MA) added a score of her own. Sophomore Katie Schebel (Ludlow, MA) also played well for AMC, grabbing three draw controls and leading all players with seven ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Lourdes Pena (Lawrence, MA) came into the game with 12 minutes remaining in the first half and went on to make six saves in net for the AMCATS.
The AMCATS jumped on the board early in the first half, as Hevy scored on a free position shot after just 16 seconds of action.
The Mustangs then grabbed the lead on consecutive unassisted goals by Thompson less than two minutes apart.
After Hevy tied the score on her second free position goal of the half, the Mustangs responded by running off six unanswered goals, including four from Thompson, to build an 8-2 advantage.
AMC received unassisted tallies from both Hevy and Moore before the end of the half, but went into the break trailing 9-4.
The Mustangs then took control in the second half scoring 10 unanswered goals and outshooting the AMCATS 18-5 in the period, to capture the 19-4 win in their program opener.
Mount Ida will take the field again on Saturday when they play Pine Manor at 1:00 pm at a neutral location for their first ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.
