WOMEN'S LAX STAYS PERFECT WITH FIRST GNAC WIN OVER GATORS

The Mount Ida College women’s lacrosse program continues it perfection in its inaugural season this 2010 with their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over hosting Pine Manor College Saturday afternoon winning 18-3 on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon in Boston, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs improve to 2-0, 1-0 in league play.

The visiting Mustangs have now won their only two games since becoming an NCAA and Great Northeast Athletic Conference program. Junior Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) led all players with nine goals and 17 shots, this on the heels of a 10-goal effort in Mount Ida’s 19-4 win against Anna Maria last Wednesday.

Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) led Pine Manor, which played down with two goals and five shots. Playing in her first collegiate game, Myrell Redmond found the back of the net on one of her three shots, tying Deegan for team-high honors with two ground balls.

Thompson scored four of the game’s first five goals, and head coach Perry Steere’s Mustangs opened up a 7-0 lead after 20:00. Redmond got the Gators on the board with 7:10 left in the first half, then, after Thompson’s fifth goal of the half, Deegan closed the frame with a score at the 1:11 mark.

Deegan started the second with another goal just over 2:00 in, getting the shorthanded Gators to within 8-3. If Thompson scoring two of the next three goals didn’t ice it for the Mustangs, an injury that knocked Deegan out for the remainder of the contest did. With a three-player advantage over the final 13:30, Mount Ida scored seven straight goals to close the book on an 18-3 victory.

Mustang goaltender freshman Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) notched three saves in the victory now 2-0 in net in her first season with the program.  Mount Ida also saw scores from junior Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) notching four goals.  Junior Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) tallied two scores while junior’s Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport Senior), Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) and freshman Charlotte Clauson (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) all scored one apiece.

In her first game in goal, Pine Manor freshman Colleen Tencza (South Meriden, CT/Platt) made a game-high nine saves.

The Gators were done in largely due to the team’s 14 turnovers, which led to a 35-9 Mustangs advantage in shots. Mount Ida controlled 10 ground balls to Pine Manor’s eight.

The Mustangs will travel to Elms College this coming Saturday in Chicopee, Massachusetts starting at 2:00 p.m.
