WOMEN'S LAX DROPS FIRST LOSS OF 2010 TO CORSAIRS

The Mount Ida College women’s lacrosse team dropped their first loss of the 2010 season against visiting non-conference UMASS-Dartmouth 14-8 Wednesday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs fall to 4-1 overall and remain 1-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) while the Corsairs improve to 2-0.

The visitors jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead at the 12:36 mark in the first half after goals by senior Liz Stapleton (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield), junior Samantha Wonson (Lowell, MA/Lowell), and sophomore’s Allison O’Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and Larissa Basque (Plainville, MA/King Phillip).

The Mustangs answered three minutes later with two goals of their own, both unassisted, by junior’s Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, MD/Northern Burlington Regional) and Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) cutting the visiting advantage to two scores down 4-2 with 3:51 to go in the first stanza.

The squads eventually exchanged scores, started by the Corsairs, on a score by senior Allison Trearchis (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro) followed by a freshman Stephanie Hill (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) goal for the Mustangs fed from junior Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/East Patchogue) making it 5-3 in favor of UMD.

The Corsairs netted the final goal with under a minute to go in the half on a successful free position attempt by junior Samantha Wonson (Lowell, MA/Lowell) taking a 6-3 advantage into the break along with the momentum.

Five UMASS-Dartmouth scores started the second half building a commanding 11-3 lead at the 23 minute mark.  Trearchis and freshman Brittney Enos (East Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth) each added two a piece during the five goal stretch along with one from junior Gillian Carey (Waltham, MA/Waltham/UMASS).

The Mustangs never let up trading goals with the Corsairs on two different occasions towards the end of the contest.  Mount Ida dug too far into a hole in order to mount a comeback earlier on in the half eventually surrendering a 14-8 loss.

The Mustangs were led by Chuba, Hill, and junior newcomer Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) who all notched two scores a piece.  Thompson and Sarno chipped in one goal each during the contest.

The Corsairs had two players with three goals each from Trearchis and Enos along with two a piece by Wonson and Basque.

Mount Ida goaltender Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) was solid denying 16 Corsair shots while UMD keeper Liz Miller (Littleton, MA/Westford Academy/UNH) stopped 12 shots.  Both goalies played the entire contest.

The Mustangs will travel to St. Joseph’s College (ME) for their second conference match-up of the season this coming Friday starting at 5:30 p.m.
