WOMEN'S LAX NOTCHES SECOND GNAC WIN OVER RAIDERS
Behind a nine goal performance by Mount Ida College women’s lacrosse junior Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton), the Mustangs routed visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) member Rivier College 21-7 Saturday afternoon on a windy and cold day in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs improve to 6-4 overall, 2-3 in league play while the Raiders fall to 2-5, 1-3 in the GNAC.
Mount Ida, who never trailed through the entire contest, scored the first three goals of the game on scores from Thompson, freshman Jemima Lauriston (Taunton, MA/Taunton), and junior Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) for the outright 3-0 advantage in the opening two minutes of the game.
The Raiders answered scoring two out of the next three goals from freshmen Lauren Brett (Otisfield, ME/Oxford Hills Comp.) and Jordyn Reyes (Amesbury, MA/Ipswich). Thompson would add another for the Mustangs leading 4-2 with 23 minutes remaining in the half.
Two consecutive goals by Chuba inflated the Mustang lead to 6-2 with 15:44 left in the first half. Rivier answered immediately following on two scores of their own from Brett and sophomore Bridget Emerson (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown) cutting the hosts lead to 6-4.
Five straight goals by Mount Ida produced a commanding lead for the Mustangs on two goals from Chuba and one apiece from Thompson and junior’s Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport Senior) and Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) good for the 11-4 advantage with under five minutes to go in the first half.
Rivier notched the final two goals of the half cutting the Mustang lead to 11-6 on two consecutive scores from junior Natalie Bonvie (Salem, NH/Salem) to head into the break.
Seven straight goals to start the second half pretty much solidified the victory for Mount Ida on five goals from Thompson and one each from Chuba and freshman Stephanie Hill (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) for the outright 18-6 lead.
After the visitors added one more in the 17th minute of the second half on a score from Reyes, the Mustangs would rally with the final three goals of the contest on all single scores from Feeter, Thompson, and Sarno for the 21-7 GNAC victory.
Mount Ida netminder Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) denied seven Raider shots while Rivier sophomore goaltender Lauren Hall (Pelham, NH/Pelham) blocked eight Mustang shots.
Mount Ida will host GNAC rival and neighboring school Lasell College Monday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m.
