WOMEN'S LAX ZAPS LASERS 14-8 IN GNAC VICTORY MONDAY
Mount Ida College junior Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) enjoyed her second consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game with nine goals en route to a 14-8 victory over visiting and neighboring rival Lasell College Monday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs, who secure themselves into fourth place in the conference tying Lasell in the standings with the win, improve to 7-4, 3-3 in the GNAC while Lasell falls to 7-6, 3-3 in conference play.
The Mustangs scored the first five goals of the contest starting with an unassisted score by freshman Jemima Lauriston (Taunton, MA/Taunton) giving the hosts the 1-0 advantage four minutes into the game.
Thompson went on to notch the next four scores giving the Mustangs a commanding 5-0 advantage off two feeds from junior Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport Senior) and one from junior Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) with under 20 minutes to go in the first half.
The teams exchanged free position goals starting with Lasell on a senior Andrea Ward (Hingham, MA/Hingham) score followed by Mount Ida on another from Thompson for her sixth goal of the game with the Mustangs leading 6-1 midway through the half.
Lasell reeled off the next two scores on goals by Ward from freshman Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) and an unassisted score from senior Kristen Noble (West Milford, NJ/West Milford TW) cutting the hosts advantage to 6-3 at the 11 minute mark.
Mount Ida did not let up scoring the final three goals of the first half on a free position shot by junior Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional), another from Thompson, and Feeter’s first of the game for the 9-3 lead heading into the break.
The Lasers opened up the second half with a junior April McGrath (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) score from Noble trailing 9-4. Thompson answered two minutes later for her seventh goal of the contest off a feed from Lauriston up 10-4 at the 26 minute mark in the second stanza.
The visitors came right back and scored again on a Karynne Carbral (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) goal from Noble cutting the Mount Ida advantage to 10-5.
Thompson came right back to notch her eighth of the game on an unassisted goal. Lasell answered with a Ward score from Slattery immediately following trailing 11-6.
Chuba sealed the deal with two consecutive goals, on unassisted and the other off a free position shot, for the 13-6 lead.
Although the visitors scored two with under 10 minutes to go on scores from Ward and sophomore Riley Fickett (Nottingham, NH/Dover), Thompson quieted the momentum of the visitors with her ninth and final goal of the contest on a dish from sophomore Jeileen Rivera (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) capturing the 14-8 GNAC victory.
Mount Ida netminder Devyn Frank (Mystic, CT/Fitch) was outstanding all afternoon denying 11 Laser shots while Lasell freshman goaltender Lindsey Cahoon (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) made 13 saves.
The Mustangs will host GNAC powerhouse Simmons College Thursday afternoon on Senior Day starting at 3:00 p.m.
