SHARKS SNEAK BY MUSTANGS, EARN GNAC WIN, 11-10

Saturday, April 13, 2013 (Winsor Field)- The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team was defeated by the Sharks of Simmons College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 11-10.  With the setback, the Mustangs drop to (5-9, 2-6 GNAC) while Simmons improves to (7-3, 6-2 GNAC). 

The Mustangs were led offensively by senior defense Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton) who tallied three goals and added an assist while sophomore Amanda Bowen (Randolph, VT/Randolph Union) recorded two goals and one assist along with.  Junior attack Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) scored twice on the day on three shots and freshman Samantha Basler (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) tallied a hat trick on the day.

Mount Ida scored first as Molly Shepard beat keeper Kelly Last (West Haven, CT) down low. Simmons scored the next three goals as Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, MA), Wallace and Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, MA) each beat Mustangs goalkeeper Kayla Musty (Topsham, VT/Oxbow) for a 3-1 lead.

The Mustangs channeled their offense in the middle of the half, scoring the next four goals to regain the lead, 5-3 on tallies by Bowen, Basler, Sheppard and Milot.  Callie Warnock (Kingston, MA) scored her first goal of the game to cut the lead to one off a pass from Oliveri but the Mustangs scored twice more before time expired to lead the Sharks at halftime, 7-4.

In the second half, the teams alternated scoring over the first twenty minutes as Bowen, Milot and Basler added to the Mustangs lead and Gilbert, Warnock and Ali Stonehouse (Keene, NH) tallied for Simmons.

Down 10-4 with ten minutes remaining, the Sharks began to chip away the Mustangs lead, as Gilbert scored unassisted and Wallace buried a free position shot past Musty. With 1:15 remaining, Luke found Warnock in the arc, who then found the top corner to tie the game at ten.

Gilbert won the draw control and Leanne Luke (Newton, MA) fed Megan Coffey (Wilmot Flat, NH) who tallied the game winner with just 0:43 left on the clock.

Musty would see the entire game in goal for the Mustangs making 13 saves on 24 shots while Last saw the first thirty minutes of the game for the Sharks while Crystal Derosier (Kingston, MA) saw second half action making four saves on seven shots.

The Mustangs will get back to work on Monday, April 15, 2013 when they travel to MASCAC opponent Fitchburg State University for a 6:30 p.m. game time. Simmons will travel to Northfield, VT to take on Norwich University on Wednesday afternoon with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.
