MOUNT IDA LOSES HEARTBREAKER, 2-1, TO EMERSON, Mustangs lose first GNAC match-up

Today was the first round of conference play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for the Mount Ida College women’s soccer team facing off against the lions from Emerson College. It was close the whole way through until the final three minutes of the game when the Lions came down roaring, netting one with 3:35 left on the clock on a hot Saturday in September at Mount Ida College.

The Mustangs got the game started first with a rocket by freshman Lindsay Lincoln (Clarksburg, MA/Clarksburg) over the head of Emerson goaltender Katie Hartman (Northfield, NJ/Mainland) to make the score 1-0. It was Lincoln’s first goal in a Mount Ida uniform.

The Lions came storming back with a goal of their own with 1:39 left in the first half by junior Alex Matthews (Queensbury, NY/Lake George) coming from a cross by teammate and freshman midfielder Lisa Viccione (Meridian, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall).

It was all knotted up at the half by a score of 1-1 until the final three minutes of the game. Emerson was firing at the net until a ball popped out to Lions sophomore Rachel Lerma (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge) who launched one in the bottom right corner of the net. This would be the final goal of the contest giving Emerson the victory and their first conference win of the season.

Mustang goalkeeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) played the entire game saving four and Emerson goalie Hartman saved one.

The Mustangs will stay home for their next contest against Curry College Thursday, September 13, 2007 for a 3:30 p.m. start.
