WOMEN'S SOCCER TROUNCED BY EMMANUEL 2-0
In the 53rd minute during the beginning of the second half, Emmanuel College unlocked a 0-0 tie on a Melanie Hoffman (Topsham, ME/Mount Ararat) goal in the front of the box off a feed from sophomore Amber DiNucci (Assonet, MA/Apponequet Regional) giving the Saints the 1-0 advantage that eventually proved to be the game winner. Emmanuel (11-6-0, 9-3-0 GNAC) walked away with the 2-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over hosting Mount Ida College for their ninth conference win of the year moving them into second place in the GNAC. The Mustangs drop their third consecutive loss making their record 3-11-2 overall and 1-9-1 in conference play.
The Saints tacked on a second goal in the 60th minute by DiNucci who juggled the ball over the Mount Ida defense and volleyed a shot past the dive of Mustang keeper Meghan Begins (Jericho, VT/Jericho) into the left corner of the net. This gave the visitors the outright 2-0 lead with no answer from the hosts for the remainder of the contest.
There was a questionable non-call in the 75th minute by the officials off a shot from Mustang freshman Kim Mclean (Watertown, MA/Watertown) that hit the cross bar and came straight down. It appeared to have crossed the goal line, but the goaltender quickly snatched the ball from the air and ran out of the zone to punt. After a quick fuss by Mount Ida play resumed and the game eventually ended at 2-0 for a Saints win.
Mustang goalie Begins denied nine shots and was again solid in net with a handful of very difficult saves that kept hope alive for her teammates. Emmanuel keeper senior Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, NH/Dover) didn't see too much action stopping three. The Saints outshot Mount Ida 20-10 for the game.
Senior day is this coming Thursday for the Mustangs along with their final regular season contest of the year against Rivier College starting at 3:30 p.m.
