MUSTANGS "LIGHT THE NIGHT" FOR CANCER RESEARCH

This past Thursday on the Boston Common, the Mount Ida College women's soccer team joined over 2,500 people along side Millennium Pharmaceuticals for the 2009 Light the Night Walk in support of blood cancer education and research.

Light the Night is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to millions of people with cancer.  Hosted by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, this event raises funds for blood cancer research, which has led or contributed to major advances in cancer treatment for over 60 years.

"This was a terrific opportunity for the women's soccer team to get out into the community and support a really good cause," said women's soccer Head Coach Joseph Campbell.  "I think it is important for them to realize that they are leaders and role models and they need to be out in the community representing, not only women's soccer but also Mount Ida College."

The Light the Night walk serves as a great opportunity to show support for all the patients and families.  The walk has raised more than 209 million since its inception 11 years ago.

During the Light the Night walk, family, friends and teams of co-workers walk together in twilight holding illuminated balloons, drawing attention to the critical need to find cures and provide families with ongoing care and support.  White balloons represented survivors, red balloons represented supporters and gold balloons represented those "in memory."

"The team enjoyed the experience immensely," said Campbell. "Hopefully this is the first of many community service projects we will participate in throughout the year."

The Mustangs will play Johnson & Wales University this coming Monday starting at 3:30 p.m. for more Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
