MUSTANGS VICTORIOUS IN FIRST EVER CLUB TENNIS MATCH
The Mount Ida Women's Tennis team traveled to Paxton, Massachusetts this Wednesday to play Anna Maria College winning their first ever division III match-up 7-2.
The opening match would be first singles, Mount Ida's Amey Grella playing Anna Maria's Michelle Gregoire. During the first set Grella and Gregoire played long games and Gregoire seemed to come up with all of the big points, taking the first set 6-2. In the second set Grella took charge of the net and outlasted her opponent in long rallies resulting in a 6-4 victory. They had to play a super-tie-breaker in lieu of a third set - first to ten, win by two. It was neck and neck the whole time but in the end Grella held on to win it 10-8.
In the second singles match Mount Ida's Chrissy Haley was recovering from a cold and so Anna Maria agreed to let her play on the one indoor court which was available. Chrissy played consistently, keeping the ball deep and letting her opponent make the mistakes. She defeated Natasha Dziokonski 6-2, 6-0.
The third singles match was all out battle with Mount Ida's Aya Hirai taking on Dominique Marchand from Anna Maria. The first set was very even with Hirai holding on to win in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). AmCat Marchand displayed immense power but Hirai was not intimidated and able to return most of her hard hit shots. Toward the end of the third set Marchand pushed hard for the victory, but Hirai held steady, winning the set 6-4.
The fourth singles match was Marina Menchi versus Nicki Hackenson. It was an even match and fought well from both sides, but in the end AmCats Hackenson ended up recording the victory.
At fifth singles Kyana took the court and quickly gained control of the match, winning the first set 6-1. Her opponent, Mariel Marfongelli gave more resistance in the second set, but Kyana held on to take it the set 6-4. Kyana recorded the first win of the day and now holds the honor of recording the first ever Mustang individual match win.
Whitney Dosik played Senior Lexie Zabik at sixth singles. It was a good first match for Dosik, but in the end Zabik gained the advantage and won the match.
The teams would then engage in the doubles matches. Third doubles took to the court first. Anna Maria's Brittany Curran and Lexie Zabik was no match for the Mustangs of Kyana and Ariel Rich. Kyana served well, Ariel hit amazing volleys capturing the outright 8-0 lead. And that put the Mustangs over the top, ahead 5-2 clinching the match.
First doubles began their play on the indoor court. Grella and Chrissy Haley paired up here and faced their opponents from singles - Michelle and Natasha. Grella and Haley earned the early lead. Haley hit great groundstrokes and Grella hit fantastic volleys. They defeated their opponents 8-3.
Hirai's singles match took so long that it was still in progress when third doubles finished. Hirai and Menchi took the court against the team of Melissa Recore and Marial from number five singles. Each team held serve to open the match, and then Hirai and Menchi opened up a lead. They noticed that one of the Anna Maria players was not as strong as the other player, and they correctly played the ball to her. Good strategy and good execution - Mount Ida won this one 8-2.
