MUSTANGS DROP SECOND CONFERENCE BID TO SIMMONS

The Simmons College volleyball team defeated Mount Ida College, 3-2, by scores of 25-18, 17-25, 13-25, 25-22 and 15-13, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. With the win, the Sharks improve to 7-6 (GNAC, 2-2), while the Mustangs fall to 9-9 (GNAC, 2-2).

Simmons came out strong, winning the first game 25-18, with a solid all around team performance.  However, the Sharks would go on to drop the next two games as the Mustangs, one of the top contenders in the GNAC conference fought back to take game two, 25-17 and game three, 25-13.  But Mount Ida could not regain the offensive momentum dropping the final two games 25-22 and 15-13 taking their ninth loss of the season, and second conference loss, home to Newton, MA.

Mount Ida was led by sophomore Chelsea Darnell (Dublin, OH/Dublin Scioto) who tallied 11 kills and four digs.  Middle blocker Lauren Biondo (Coventry, RI/Coventry) was solid in front of the net recording eight kills and one block assist while freshman Cody Fusco (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco Waldorf) and sophomore Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) combined for 25 assists.  Senior captain Blair Canan (North Reading, MA/North Reading) added 13 digs.

The Mustangs will host Daniel Webster College this coming Tuesday at Mount Ida in Newton, Massachusetts starting at 6:00 p.m.
