MUSTANGS BACK ON TRACK AGAINST DANIEL WEBSTER
The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team tallied their 10th win of the year against non-conference opponent Daniel Webster College winning 3-0 in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-10, and 25-15. The hosts improve to 10-9 overall while the Eagles drop to 8-4 on the year.
The Mustangs came out hot in game one building a strong 6-2 advantage on five consecutive points. The hosts continued to dominate up around the 14-5 mark capped off on a kill by freshman Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN/Dekalb). The Eagles wouldn't go away getting as close as 19-15, going on a 12-3 run. But Mount Ida sealed off the victory on two consecutive kills by junior Amanda Pereira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) and a hitting error by the visitors giving them the 25-18 win up 1-0 in the match.
Game two was close in the early stages with Mount Ida maintaining the small 9-4 lead off a Daniel Webster hitting error. The next point would be a hammered kill by Pereira, and the Mustangs went galloping off on an offensive bludgeoning. The hosts went broke off a 12-4 run, taking the 21-8 advantage, riding away with the 25-10 victory making it 2-0 in the match.
Starting with a 1-1 tie in game three, Daniel Webster notched eight consecutive points to go up 8-1 early on. Mount Ida came stampeding back on nine straight points taking the 10-8 advantage. The score knotted at 10-10 off two Mustang hitting errors. That's about as close as the visitors would get while the hosts pulled away mounting the 25-15 game three victory and the 3-0 match win.
Pereira led Mount Ida in the offensive attack with 12 kills while Gilbert and sophomore Chelsea Darnell (Dublin, OH/Dublin Scioto) tallied seven a piece. Freshman Cody Fusco (San Francisco, CA/San Francisco Waldorf) and senior captain Stephanie Saito (West Linn, OR/West Linn) combined for 31 assists. Junior ‘s Cherie Parisi (North Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) and Lauren Biondo (Coventry, RI/Coventry) notched one block each while freshman Deanna Jimenez (Flanders, NJ/Pope John XIII) totaled 10 digs.
The Mustangs will be on the road this weekend entering their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at Norwich University versus the Cadets and St. Joseph College (CT) on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m.
