The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team, under the direction of first year Head Coach Craig Martin, captured their first win of 2012 going 1-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match at Daniel Webster College Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology (25-16, 25-21, 16-25 and 25-23) following a 3-0 loss to the hosting Eagles (25-13, 25-16 and 25-21).
The Mustangs improve to 1-3 overall with a conference slate of 1-1 and will head home to host league and neighboring foe Lasell College Wednesday evening with game time slated for 6:00 p.m. at Mount Ida Athletic Center.
In the opener, the Eagles hit .264 as a team while the Mustangs managed just .011 on offense as part of a 25-13, 25-16, 25-21 victory. Samantha Hill (Hudson, NH) led Daniel Webster with nine kills and added seven digs and four aces, while Brier Temple (Concord, NH) hit. 529 with nine kills against no errors in 17 attempts, and Jennifer Finneran (Barnstead, NH) hit .500 with eight kills against no errors in 16 attempts with two solo blocks.
Ally Hayden (Bedford, NH) dished off 27 assists, Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, MA/Ayer) led the Mustangs (1-4) with 11 kills and six digs, while Trudy Goetchius (North Andover, MA/Lawrence Vocational) added six kills. Julie Smith had 12 assists while Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) handed out 11 dishes.
The Mustangs bounced back to take down the Leopards with a 25-16, 25-21, 16-25, 25-23 victory with Ferreira again leading Mount Ida with 12 kills, 13 digs and four aces. Toni Vegiard (S. Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) pulled in 25 digs, while Goetchius and Shay Collins (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) had five kills each.
Julie Rahilly (Nashua, NH) led Wentworth (2-2) with nine kills, while Michelle Hobbs knocked down seven kills and 13 digs. Jessica Houghton (Billerica, MA) added a match-high 27 digs and Sam Curran (Quincy, MA) racked up 21 assists.
