Mustangs Close Home Tri-Match with Sweep of Hornets

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College picked up a 3-0 victory over Lyndon State College to earn a split of their home non-conference women's volleyball tri-match on Saturday afternoon at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

The Mustangs (2-1) took care of the Hornets by scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-20 to end the day on a high note after they were beaten 3-0 in the opening game by Daniel Webster College. The Eagles won both of their matches on the day, sweeping Lyndon State 3-0 in the neutral site match.

Senior Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) led the way with seven kills and two blocks, while junior Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) also turned in seven kills and led all players defensively with 13 digs.

The freshman tandem of Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) and Brenda Sosa (Lawrenceville, Ga.) combined for 23 assists, and first year Eleni Tsetsos (Waterbury, Conn.) had a double-digit game with ten kills, along with a game-high four service aces.

First year Hanna Simpkins (Walpole, N.H.) added three kills, four digs and a block assist in Mount Ida's win.

The Hornets got a game-high nine kills and a shared team-high of nine kills from freshman Lauren McDonough (Glastonbury, Conn.), and their offense ran through senior Gwyneth Stahl (Whitinsville, Mass.), who piled up 14 assists in a losing effort.

Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) added six kills and six digs, as well as two solo blocks for Lyndon State (1-2).

The Mustangs got their noses in front in the first game, but Daniel Webster came from behind to grab a 25-23 win, and then played strong defense to capture 25-21 and 25-16 victories and earn the three-set sweep.

Senior Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) led Daniel Webster with nine kills and made just three errors on 34 total attempts, while also racking up a team-high 14 digs.

For the Mustangs, Reidy notched a double-double with 12 kills and 22 digs, while Bell assisted on 28 kills and she and senior Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) each had ten digs as well.

The home team jumped out to a 9-5 lead in set one and led 21-18, but with Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) serving two aces, the Eagles fought back and took a 22-21 lead. Three errors down the stretch allowed them to take the first set.

Daniel Webster quickly doubled their advantage by grabbing a 16-6 lead in set two and never looking back, despite Mount Ida going on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to two. Kills by Beard and Hannah Koehler (Bedford, N.H.) sealed the win for the visitors.

In the third set, Daniel Webster pulled away with a 6-2 run to take a 17-13 lead, and then scored the final eight points of the match, seven of them served by Rebecca Hoffman (Andover, Mass.), who finished the match with an ace.

Mount Ida continues their four-game home-stand to start the season on Tuesday, September 6th when they host Pine Manor at 6:00 PM.

Koehler led the way with nine kills and Daniel Webster (2-0) overcame a first-set deficit by scoring the last seven points of the game before breezing to a 25-14 win in the second set and sealing the sweep with a 25-22 victory.

Murtagh tallied eight kills and a game-high 19 digs in the loss for the Hornets, while also serving three aces.

The Eagles racked up 14 service aces in the win, four apiece by Beard and Roulier, who also stuffed the stat sheet with 15 digs and 7 kills.

Amanda Gendron (Mount Vernon, N.H.) also had seven kills to go with five digs in the win, and Courtney Warrington (Oceanside, Calif.) turned in an 11 dig effort.
