Volleyball Toppled in Worcester Tri-Match

WORCESTER – The Mount Ida College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at a difficult non-conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon at WPI Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers topped the Mustangs in four sets, 25-17, 20-25, 25-13, 25-17, while the Leopards blanked Mount Ida 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 26-24).

WPI, who has now won all five matches played in the facility since 2014, is now 6-0 while Wentworth dips to 6-1 and Mount Ida evens out at 3-3.

Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) delivered a match-best 14 kills and Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) handed out a match-high 22 helpers for Mount Ida. Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) turned in 14 digs and Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) added 10. 

Claire Quick turned in a double-double thanks to 11 digs and 10 kills. Katelyn Carlson, who narrowly missed a double-double, handed out 10 more assists to go along with three aces. Lillie Clark dug out 15 balls followed by Rogoz with 10.

The Leopards were down as much as 10 in the third set before a 13-2 run turned the deficit into a 23-22 lead. It would be tied again at 23-23 and 24-24 until an attack miscue and a service ace by freshman Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, AR) sealed the victory.

Reidy secured a double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs. Bell dished out 28 helpers while sophomore Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, MA), freshman Eleni Tsetsos (Waterbury, CT) and Dunbar logged 13, 12 and 10 digs, respectively. 

Casey Hunt (Granby, Conn.) swatted eight kills as Duarte served up a quartet of aces. Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, Mass.) (17) and Shay Feeley (Franklin, Mass.) (13) totaled 30 assists while Hunt also came up with 11 digs to accompany a match-high 22 by sophomore Victoria Nassar (Salem, NH). Hunt and junior Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) each helped on three blocks. 

The Engineers open NEWMAC action Tuesday at MIT and Wentworth heads to Lasell. Both matches are a 7pm first serve. Mount Ida heads to Curry Tuesday for a 6pm start.
