Salem, Mass. -- Mount Ida cruised to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-21) victory over Salem State on Tuesday evening at Twohig Gymnasium in a non-conference volleyball match. The Mustangs improve to 8-19 while Salem state slips to 6-21.
Mount Ida took the first set 25-19 as Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) registered three kills while the Mustangs held Salem State to -.182% hitting. After a back and forth affair to open the game, Mount Ida opened up a 20-15 lead, taking advantage of multiple errors by Salem State before settling for the six-point win.
After a dominating win in set two, the Mustangs closed out the Vikings in a close third set. Three kills by Haley Reed (Goffstown, N.H.) helped Salem State maintain a 19-19 tie. Another kill by Jasmine Severino (Lawrence, Mass.) temporarily gave the Vikings a 20-19 lead. However, after Mount Ida tied the set at 20-20, Salem State committed five straight errors to give the match to the Mustangs.
Reidy led the Mustangs with seven kills, 12 digs and four aces. Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) added 20 assists and nine digs. Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) had five kills apiece, while Katherine Eastwood (Amityville, N.Y.) and Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) each added eight digs.
Emily Hennessy (Hanover, Mass.) paced Salem State with five kills while Hannah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) added 17 digs on defense. Mackenzie Salls (Turners Falls, Mass.) and freshman Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) each had nine assists.
Mount Ida closes out their 2016 season and celebrates seniors Alkinburg and Dunbar when they host Anna Maria and Norwich in a tri-match on Friday beginning at 4:00 PM.
Salem State hosts Gordon on Thursday for their final home game at 7:00 PM.
