Alkinburg, Dunbar Take Final Bows in Mustang Volleyball Finale

NEWTON, Mass. – Seniors Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) and Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, Mass.) were celebrated in their final games for Mount Ida College women's volleyball, as the Mustangs finished out their 2016 season with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match against Anna Maria College and Norwich University.

The Mustangs (9-20, 2-9 GNAC) closed out their season with a 3-0 win over Norwich, salvaging a split of the tri-match after Anna Maria beat both Mount Ida and Norwich by 3-0 score-lines.

Game One: Anna Maria 3, Mount Ida 0

Behind a game-high 19 kills from sophomore Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.), the Amcats handed the Mustangs a three-set loss with scores of 25-10, 25-17, and 25-18. Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) added 11 kills and seven digs in the win, and sophomore libero Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) had a game-high 17 digs.

Mount Ida was paced by eight kills from Alkinburg and nine digs and 19 assists out of freshman setter Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.).

Junior hitter Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) had seven kills and nine digs in the loss, while freshman Eleni Tsetsos (Waterbury, Conn.) served two aces for the Mustangs.

Anna Maria served 12 aces in the win, getting three apiece from Demi Carrero (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), Alyssa Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.), King, and Tierney Clancey (Meriden, Conn.), who had 31 assists for an Amcats team that hit .348, making just five errors, starting with a first set in which they hit .421 and made just one error en route to the 25-10 victory.

Sophomore Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) had five kills in the loss for the Mustangs.

Game Three: Mount Ida 3, Norwich 0

Reidy led all players with 11 kills and 13 digs, and Bell had a double-double with 13 digs and 22 assists as the Mustangs won by scores of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-19. Mount Ida had twelve kills and hit .276 in the first set of the match to get themselves off and running and took advantage of 25 total attacking errors by the Cadets.

Dunbar racked up 9 digs in the win, and Alkinburg had two kills, three aces and a big solo block in her final game.

Walton added five kills in the win, while Hanna Simpkins (Walpole, N.H.) had three kills in the final game of her freshman year.

The Cadets (6-16, 1-10 GNAC) were led by Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio), who had six kills and ten assists, along with three service aces. Katie Crane (Avon, N.Y.) had nine assists and five digs, and Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) led all players with 18 digs defensively.

Freshman Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) contributed five kills and four digs. 

Game Two: Anna Maria 3, Norwich 0

In the neutral game, the Amcats improved to 20-10 (8-3 GNAC) by beating Norwich 25-15, 25-12, and 25-14, hitting .349 as a team and notching double-digit kills in each of the three sets, including 17 kills in set three.

King had another huge game, with 23 kills and Foti was also in double-digits again with 10 kills to go with eight digs and three service aces. Clancey had 34 assists and Garcia was superb defensively again, with 16 more digs.

Emily Oliver led the Cadets with nine kills, Dawson posted 12 digs and two service aces and Ashley Nau (Sunrise, Fla.) pitched in five kills in the loss. Courtney Nau (Sunrise, Fla.) added three kills, and Katie Crane led the offense with 13 assists.
